It's possible that the love was gone for quite a while and they just waited for a moment to make it official were you would have time to digest it - without having to worry about school o top of it.
People not loving each other 'anymore' is something that happens quite frequently and there are many complicated and hard to explain factors that can contribute to it. As unhelpful as this may sound 'today': You will understand this way better once you're older and have gone through a few "serious" romantic relationships yourself. It will probably still make you feel sad, but it will feel (for lack of a better word) "less dramatic".
